Wow, a lot of good answers here, I mean really good answers. This question was a lot better received than I thought it would be, since there are a multitude of varying answers I do not feel qualified to choose the answer, let the voting begin...

I am entering Fall '07 and beginning the great laptop search. I have done some in-store looking, but the only brands that I really know of are HP and Dell and I would like to know about other lesser known brands.

First off, here is what my university recommends:

> Processor Type IBM / Compatible Intel Pentium Processor
> Processor Speed 2Ghz
> RAM 512MB
> Hard Drive 40 GB
> Display 14.1" or larger SXGA TFT Display w/32MB of Video RAM
> Operating Systems Windows XP Professional
> 10/100 Base-T Mini-PCI Ethernet Adapter (3Com is preferred)
> Adapter Capable of Connecting to a 802.11b Wireless Network (Wi-Fi Certified Card)

Personally, I am looking for a laptop that is rugged and won't physically fall apart. I'll take workmanship over performance advantages (as long as they meet the requirements listed above). The only game that I really must be able to run on this laptop is Flight Simulator X - Deluxe Edition (which follows the listed system requirements).

My Acer Aspire 3680 laptop came with Vista. I had grown unsatisfied with it and decided to switch over to XP. Due to some difficulties, I ended up reinstalling Vista on my computer, and now my internal microphone does not seem to work anymore. In fact, the computer doesnt even seem to recognize it. Ive already downloaded the Realtek audio driver, and the rest of my sound works perfectly fine. Is there something else I have to do to get it to work again?

It ejects properly. When I put a known good CD in the drive, the computer just freezes. I need to power cycle. This is very consistent. Other than this CD drive problem, the computer continues to behave properly.
Any ideas on further troubleshooting would be appreciated.
